How Do States Provide Technical
Assistance to Districts and Schools?
How Have States Implemented AYP?
How Do Districts Support Schools to Meet AYP?
How Do Schools Meet AYP?

States have never had the funding to provide technical assistance to much more than low performing schools and districts, and with continuing constraints in state budgets, states will be challenged by how best to positively impact more schools and districts. Web-based technical assistance is one way to provide quality resources to all educators for a fraction of the cost in disseminating these same resources in traditional staff development and/or paper documents.

Web-based technical assistance is one way to provide all educators and other stakeholders simultaneous access to guidance and resources. Using a web site to provide online professional development and information to the public is a strategy that has several advantages:
  • all stakeholders can access the information anytime, anywhere 24/7
  • districts and schools can build professional development around the information
  • the state can control the content accuracy and tone
  • a single point of editing promotes the most current information
  • questions can be directed to appropriate state experts
Some states already provide technical assistance on their web sites. The following examples illustrate the content and format some states have used to support schools and districts in the selected areas.

Many states release test items to the public so that they can better understand what the state assessment measures and what looks like. The following are some examples:

Maryland has released several forms of the High School Assessments.

Technical Assistance in Understanding Content Standards

Many states have placed their content standards online. Some states have provided additional support in the form of related assessments, guided explanations of how to define proficiency or use rubrics to measure successful attainment of the standards.

Illinois has created performance descriptors and classroom assessments for their Illinois Learning Standards. All Performance Descriptors and Classroom Assessments
